Why is your hair dry?

Hair dryness is a common clinical condition, causing a lot of discomfort to people who encounter it. When hair is dry, the first concern is what to do with dry hair. However, understanding what causes dry hair is important in preventing and improving hair quality.

1.Common causes of dry hair.

Dry hair is caused by the scalp not producing enough oil to keep the hair moisturized or the hair losing moisture. Hair does not lubricate itself naturally. The amount of oil secreted from the roots of the hair has a moisturizing effect on the hair and makes the hair shiny.

Sometimes, the hair does not produce enough oil, causing hair to become dry and frizzy. Hair produces less oil in older people due to the aging process. However, because the roots are located under the skin, dry hair is often accompanied by a dry scalp. When dry, the scalp flakes off and creates dandruff.

Moisture in the hair can also be lost, causing the hair to dry out. Every healthy hair has a protective layer called the cuticle. The cuticle covers the outside, which is responsible for protecting the hair from the harmful effects of the sun and heat. A healthy epidermis consists of several layers that line up close together and retain moisture within. As the cuticle separates and sheds, the cuticle’s ability to hold moisture is impaired and leads to dry, frizzy hair.

Several causes can damage your hair, including:

Using a lot of strong detergents or using them repeatedly leaves the natural oils in the hair unprotected.

Blow-dry your hair too often, especially if you’re using alcohol-based styling products.

Use a hair styler as often as a straightener or curling iron.

Hair is exposed to a lot of sun, wind, or dry air.

Using many chemicals that are harmful to hair such as dyes and perms.

2. Dry hair, what should we do?

Some simple solutions to help protect hair from drying out are:

Wash your hair less. It is recommended washing your hair of dirt once or twice a week instead of daily as many people do. In addition, when you no longer wash your hair as often, the frequency of drying and styling also decreases.

Use mild shampoos specifically made for curly hair as they will have fewer drying chemicals.

Use alcohol-free hairdressing chemicals.

After shampooing, use a moisturizing conditioner. The moisturizing conditioner will help protect the cuticle and retain the hair’s natural oils.

Massage your scalp with coconut or jojoba oil.

After trying all the above methods, if the condition of dry hair does not improve, you should see a hairstylist for advice on other intensive treatment measures. In addition, if dry hair is accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, poor cold tolerance, weakness in limbs, or hair loss, the patient should see a doctor to rule out other possible systemic diseases.
